3 Day trip Copenhagen

In the past years most of my trips took me to Asia, South America and the southern parts of Europe. The northernmost destination I did were Amsterdam and London several years ago. This was about to change in 2025. I did various cities in the northern part of Europe and my first trip took me to the danish capital. I have to say, the prices in these regions are often off-putting but at that time I just didn't care, I wanted to have a good time, hop on a plane and see these wonderful modern cities.

arriving at københavns lufthavn and where to stay

Copenhagen Airport is pretty much manageable, I flew in from Graz via Munich  so that was an easy 4h trip. Once you are in Copenhagen the cheapest way to get downtown is taking the train. The airport is linked with the train station, so just grab your stuff and hop on. You can get your tickets right at the exit of the airport and the train station can not be missed. After approximately 20 minutes you will reach the main station next to Tivoli.

Accommodations are really pricy in Copenhagen so make sure to book a room way ahead of your trip. I choose „Wake up Copenhagen - Bernstoffsgade“ - tiny rooms but really nice staff and you will find everything you need if you are traveling solo. If you are on a couple trip I would recommend a different hotel for sure - this place is more of a backpacker-location than a real hotel - I didn't mind - at the time it was pretty much ok for me.

The Hotel is located not far from main train station and the subway station. You‘ll be there in 5 minutes, after another 10 minutes you‘ll reach pretty much any place in Copenhagen. Also gives you an easy link to get in and out of the city pretty fast.

Nyhavn and the inner city

Downtown Copenhagen is pretty much manageable by foot. For those of you who want to be a little faster, there are several bike rental shops all over the place. I used to take the Subway from Main Station to Nyhavn and started exploring from there.

Nyhavn with it‘s beautiful canal and wonderful houses for sure is one big tourist trap. But I didn‘t mind - I already spent so much money on stupid shit in my life - I just wanted to have this 11 EUR beer right in front of this beautiful scenery. If you want to safe some money on drinks I would not recommend staying all night in this area. There are a few cool pubs where you can get your beer for 6 - 10 Euro as well. I really love "Charlie's Bar" - a small pub with a huge amount of different beers - and I went to "The Dubliner" more like a big tourist Pub but you'll meet some cool people there.

In the evenings street musicians are entertaining the crowd while the sun just seams to not go down till 11pm. I spent a lot of time in Nyhavn 17 - totally pricy totally overrated but at that time I just wanted to let my soul dangle.

When you cross the canal and walk towards the food market you‘ll reach my favorite part of Copenhagen, Christianshavn. Besides the mentioned street food market, you‘ll find some small Cafés on the waterfront which offer beautiful views on the Opera. I just loved this area. Stop by, grab a coffee and a cinnamon roll and just enjoy life for a couple of minutes (or hours, like I did.) I really enjoyed hanging out at "Hart Bageri Holmen" at: Galionsvej 41 - tiny little bakery with quite cheap coffee and some wonderful unhealthy stuff to eat.

If you are lucky you'll find a spot directly in front of the cafe right next to the waterfront. I spent hours there, just watching people and boots pass by. Copenhagen really gives you a laid back feeling - it is crowded but still gets you down in a good way.

Sightseeing in CPH

For sure the most famous sight when it comes to Copenhagen is the little mermaid. And man, „little“ is the perfect term for this statue. Located at the shore of Osterport, take the Subway to Osterport station, walk into the Park and just follow the crowd of excited chinese tourists.

If you be there early in the morning the water is still in low tight which gives you the chance to hop on one of the big rocks right in front of the statue to take some real good pictures.

On your way back into the city center you might want to check out Frederiks Kirke which is also not really crowded in the morning.

If you want to take it easy for a few hours, Rosenborg Castle and its beautiful park might be a good next stop for you. After you let your soul dangle for a good amount of time let's head back into the more crowded areas.

Go check out the Københavns Rådhus at Rådhuspladsen - by day you'll be run over since this is quite a good spot to meet up or to find all kinds of restaurtants and bars right next to it. So you might want to be there really early or like I did - in the middle of the night. (Ok I was heading back home from a bar but still took the chance to pause for a few minutes and appreciate this place for myself.)

Fristad Christiania

This in 1971 founded area in the middle of Copenhagen should be on list when you visit the city. I heard it used to be way more crazier back in the days. Cop-free, free-love, drugy, no photo area. These days seemed to be gone a long time ago.

Today Christiania is a place where dropouts create and sell their art to keep the place rolling. You can find some real cool street art and a lot of hand crafted stuff. Also some restaurants and bars can be fund. Watch out, it‘s the only place in Copenhagen where not all snackbars take Credit cards - so carry some cash if you get hungry.

I just found 2-3 really lost souls, I thought this place will be way wilder, still I think you have to check it out when in Copenhagen. As a big fan of street art this place was for sure worth a visit. I recommend maybe two hours max to check out all of Christiania.

5 things you don't wanna miss

  • Visit the little mairmaid
  • Have a coffee or a Carlsberg beer in Nyhaven
  • Let you soul dangle in one of the beautiful park areas
  • Visit "Fristad Christiania"
  • Enjoy some really pricy Burgers at the street food market in Christianshavn
